[ATLAS] - BRION DE LA TOUR (Louis). A general look at France... to serve as an introduction to the analytical and geographical picture of this kingdom. Drawn up by different Geographers, whose works are as well known as estimated, being part of the Historical Atlas of Ancient & Modern France, updated & directed by Sieur Desnos. Paris: Grangé, Guillyn, Despilly, Durand nephew, Rozet, Delalin, Desnos, 1765-1767. - In-4, 274 x 205. Rooted basane, gilt roulette wheel framed on covers, spine ribbed and decorated, marbled edges (early 19th century binding). Original edition of this atlas published by King Louis Brion de La Tour's engineer. It is one of the most useful works conceived at the time, presenting France in an accessible way in all possible forms, divided by its governments, stewardship, dioceses, elections , parliaments, universities, hunting captaincies, etc. The edition is divided into 3 parts, each introduced by a title engraved on a double page :- DESNOS. Analytical table of France in which a general and detailed knowledge of the Kingdom is given, considered in its different forms & Government both Civil, Ecclesiastical and Military... Paris: Chez l'auteur (Desnos), 1766. Includes one title and 32 cards (out of 33). Card 19 is missing but a small card of the Generality of Caen, election of Bayeux, has been added between cards 24 and 25 - RIZZI-ZANNONI. Le Petit Neptune François, or Map of the Maritime Coasts of the Kingdom. Includes a title, 3 double-page maps and a large folding map of France "divided into its 58 provinces" which, according to the "Table of Maps " should be bound before the title of this part. - MICHEL (Claude-Sidoine).
