BAUR (Johann Wilhelm). Iconographia, Complectens in Se, Passionem, Miracula, Vitam Christi Universam, Nec Non, Prospectus Rarissimorum Portuum, Palatiorum, Hortorum, Historiarum, Aliarumq Rerum, Quæ, Per Italiam, Spectatu Sunt Dignæ. Augsburg: Melchior Küssel, 1670-1671. - 4 parts in one volume in-4 oblong, 285 x 335: (5 ff.), 36 plates, (2 ff.), 35 plates, (2 ff.), 35 plates. Marbled half-basane, spine with decorated nerves (german binding from the beginning of the XIXth century). Brunet, I, 707, an important collection published by the Augsburg engraver Melchior Küssel (1626-1683), containing 141 (out of 146) plates engraved by him from drawings by the Strasbourg-born painter, draughtsman and miniaturist Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607-1642), considered to be the best of the Alsatian artists of the 17th century. Küssel was one of those who allowed Baur's work to spread throughout Europe. He acquired a large part of the latter's drawings after his death, which he published in particular in this collection presented as a set of iconographies that could serve as models for artists. The collection is divided into four parts, the engravings of which represent the life and passion of Jesus Christ, allegories of vice and virtue, landscapes, ports, views of Italy, and so on. Each board has a legend in German. According to the description given by Brunet, this copy is incomplete with 5 plates, one in the first 3 parts and 2 in the last one. Paper of the dishes renewed, caps and hinges restored. Doubled title, minor tears and multi-plane restoration . Provenance: N. Pimrock in Bonn, with printed label from the 19th century stuck on the first lining.
