BULLIARD (Jean-Baptiste François, known as Pierre). In Latin, manuscript decorated on parchment [Paris, 1780]. - 3 volumes in-4, 315 x 240: 209 plates; 191 plates; 181 plates, (1 table f.). Dark green half gilt with corners, spine with nerves , gilt head (19th century binding). Set of 580 of the 602 plates of Pierre Bulliard's important Herbier de la France. "Pierre Bulliard (1752-1793) arrived in Paris at the age of twenty-three to study medicine and botany. The following year, he published a book on Parisian flora, strongly inspired by existing collections and pointing out Linné's observation errors. From 1780 to 1793, he devoted himself to the publication of an illustrated Herbier de France, a veritable inventory of the "indigenous plants of this kingdom; with their properties and uses in medicine". This catalogue, although limited geographically, turns out to be a huge undertaking of six hundred plates accompanied by a short text of a scientific nature. Trained by Pierre Martinet, Buffon's illustrator, Bulliard draws and engraves his plates himself, using innovative processes for colour reproduction in order to widely distribute his editions. His work reveals a meticulous descriptive spirit, but only his work on mushrooms will allow us to discover a few new species " (Gallica site). All the plates are presented in the same way, with the subject occupying the major part of the leaf, and the lower part giving the description of the plant represented. They're all in color , engraved with dolls. Of the 581 plates in this collection, 358 concern mushrooms from France, most of which are included in the second volume and the entire third volume.
