DU CHOUL (Guillaume). Discourse on the religion... - Lot 11 - Ader
DU CHOUL (Guillaume). Discourse on the religion of the ancient Romans, Castrametation & military discipline of iceux. Baths & Ancient Greek & Roman Exercises. Lyon: Guillaume Rouille, 1581. - 2 parts in one volume in-4, 228 x 161: 339 pp., (28 ff.); 154 pp., (5 ff.). Brown half-basane, decorated spine with nerves , red edges (18th century binding). New edition bringing together 3 of the texts that the Lyon antiquarian Guillaume du Choul (circa 1496-1560) devoted to ancient civilization and in particular Roman civilization, concerning respectively the Roman religion, castrametation, i.e. the art of choosing and arranging the site of a camp or fortress, and baths. These texts were first published in 1555 and 1556, the most extensive study being that on religion, which the author studies using both authentic and invented ancient coins. His text on castration is essentially a commentary on plates on the Roman army, taken from the Trajan column according to the records of Jacopo Ripanda. The first two parts are presented under a title proper; the third follows the second, separated by a false title. This book became famous thanks to its illustration. The Discourse of Religion is decorated with the author's coat of arms on the back of the title, 41 figures in the text, 6 full-page compositions and 552 sides and reverse sides of coins and medals. This rich iconography served as a model for many painters, including Nicolas Poussin. The section on castration is illustrated with the author's coat of arms and 37 full-page woodcuts. The text on the baths is adorned with 6 woodcut compositions, 3 full-page and 3 in the text. Flattened head cap, hinge slots. Clear wetnesses, more important at the last leaves . Provenance: Mr. Tarin, with ex-libris.
