FISCHER VON ERLACH (Johann Bernhard). Second edition after the one given in Vienna in 1721, this work is the work of one of the leaders of the Austrian Baroque, Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723 ). It is one of the very first texts giving a theoretical approach to architecture. Like the first one, this edition is bilingual, French-German, and includes 5 books: Some Ancient Buildings, Jews, Egyptians, Syrians, Persians & Greeks. - Some lesser-known ancient Roman Buildings. - Some Arab & Turkish buildings, as well as modern Persian, Siamese, Chinese and Japanese architecture. - Some Builders of the invention, & of the design, of the Author. - Various Ancient, Aegyptian, Greek, Roman, & Modern Vases: with some of the Author's invention. There is an engraved title, an engraved epistle, dated 1721, 5 engraved false titles, 25 sheets of printed text and 86 plates: 22 in the first book, 15 in the second, 15 in the third, 21 in the fourth and 13 in the fifth. This edition was published by the author's son from the original brass instruments. At the time, it was the "most varied collection of picturesque architecture as defined in the 18th century (in reference to the word "painting"). It evokes a journey through the architectures of all countries and all times, similar to the one proposed by the garden factories: Nymphs, tombs, obelisks, vases...
