S.l., ca. 1780 - Manuscript small in-4, 206 x 133 : map, (5 ff.), 73 pp., 3 drawings ; (1 f.), 46 pp., 1 plate ; (1 f.), 107 pp., 1 plate. Jasper calf, triple gilt fillet in the frame and gilt fleuron at the corners on the covers, spine ribbed and gilt inside , gilt edges (contemporary binding). Very beautiful manuscript made around 1780, giving the perfectly calligraphic copy of Observations on Vesuvius, Etna and other volcanoes, taken from a series of letters to the Royal Society of Scottish Archaeologist and Volcanologist William Hamilton (1730-1803). These are the observations made by the scientist during his trip to Mount Etna, and which had been sent to the Literary Society of London between 1766 and 1771. Three letters concerning Vesuvius, dated June 10, 1766, December 29, 1767, and October 4, 1768, addressed to the Earl of Morton, President of the Royal Society, for the first two and to Dr. Maty, Secretary of the Royal Society, for the last. There follows a long letter to Dr. Maty on the author's trip to Mount Etna, dated October 17, 1769. The collection ends with two letters, also addressed to Dr. Marty, concerning the nature of the soil of Naples and its surroundings, dated 16 October 1770 and 5 March 1771 respectively . The translation of these letters is unsigned and does not seem to have been published. The architect Pierre-Adrien Paris gave a translation of the Observations on Vesuvius, which has remained in manuscript form, and we have not been able to compare it to this one to see if it corresponds.
