Ferrara: heirs of Francesco Rossi and Paolo Tortorino, 1582. - 2 parts in one volume in-4, 205 x 142: (6 ff.), 70 pp., (1 f. blank); (12 ff.). Soft calfskin , smooth spine (period binding). Original edition of this rare optical treatise on the science of mirrors , composed by Rafael Mirami. Almost nothing is known about this author who presents himself on the title as a Jewish physicist and mathematician from Ferrara. His work, dedicated to the philosopher and secretary of the Duke of Ferrara Antonio Montecatini (1537-1599), deals with appearances and the effects of the mirror. He says in particular that "mirrors are for some hieroglyphs of truth in that they discover all the things that come before them, as is customary for the truth which cannot remain hidden. Others, on the contrary, take mirrors as symbols of falsity because they often show things differently than they are" (quotation reported by J. Baltrusaitis, in: Le Miroir , Paris, 1978, p. 7). The edition is illustrated with numerous diagrams in the text. Following, as is customary, is a sort of five-table summary of the previous treatise, produced by the author himself. The text is dedicated to the statesman at the court of Ferrara Camillo Giglioli, and ends with two chapters: Come si possano colmezo de gli Specchi fare Horologi Solari in luoghi ombrosi and Del significato secreto de gli Specchi. Binding very restored and brought back. Corners of several sheets redone, with slight damage to a note on page 3. Scattered freckles and a few
