Dark blue Jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, inside gilt lace, gilt edges on marbling (David). Second edition of the First Book of Poems, the last one published during the author's lifetime, more complete than the original edition of 1597. It is augmented by pieces entitled Le Fresne, L'Espérance and La Divinité des procés, a sonnet, two elegies (Sur un Anneau and À monsieur Pinart) and two little odes. This collection is particularly sought-after for poems about hunting: The Hound, The Love Deer, Adonis or the Wild Boar Hunt and Metamorphosis of a Man into a Bird. The collection of Latin poems Kalendæ Ianuariæ, & Varia quædam Poëmatia in the Patisson edition of 1603 is often attached to this first book. It is missing here, as is sometimes the case in the copies in the back bindings. Also missing , as is often the case, is Thomas de Leu's portrait of the author. However, there are two other important pieces by Jean Passerat. First of all the second edition of Præfatiuncula in disputationem de Ridiculis, first published in 1594. It is a harangue pronounced by Passerat at the Collège de France for Henri IV's entry into Paris in 1594, in which the author attacks all those he suspected of having favoured the League.
