COOPER (James Fenimore)Complete works. Paris:... - Lot 36 - Ader
COOPER (James Fenimore)Complete works. Paris: Charles Gosselin, Mame and Delaunay-Vallée, 1827-1830. - 27 volumes in-18, 154 x 99. Green half-basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (period binding). Vicar II, 964. - Champfleury, Les vignettes romtiques, page 261 .first French edition illustrated with the complete works of Fenimore Cooper, printed on vellum paper, very sought-after and particularly rare complete with all his volumes. The illustration consists of 27 intaglio engraved titles, each adorned with a vignette, and 27 etched plates printed on china paste, all drawn and engraved by Alfred and Tony Johannot. There are also 8 folding cards. According to Gustave Planche, quoted by Champfleury in his work entitled Les Vignettes romantiques: "The etchings drawn and engraved by MM. A. and T. Johannot, for Fenimore Cooper's novels, equals the best we know of the genre" (page 261). This edition is all the more important as the 27 title vignettes and 13 of the 27 etchings will not be included in the next edition of 1831-1832 . Beautiful copy in contemporary binding, well preserved in spite of the slightly lightened spines. The map in volume 16 has a tear without missing parts, formerly repaired with scotch tape, which left brown traces.
