Orange morocco, triple golden fillet framed on the plates, decorated ribbed back, inside golden lace, golden slices on witnesses , preserved cover (Chambolle Duru). Deluxe edition of 500 copies, illustrated with a portrait of the author engraved by Burney after Célestin Nanteuil, 2 title vignettes engraved by Champollion after Louis Leloir, a title-frontispiece and 17 plates, engraved by Champollion after Édouard Toudouze. One of the first 135 copies on japanese extra in-8 grape format, this one including 2 states of the illustrations, before the letter with remark and final state for the portrait, and state before the letter and final state for the title vignettes and off-text. It also includes the 4 additional illustrations made in 1885, namely the portrait of Albert and that of Mademoiselle de Maupin, engraved by Burney after Jeanniot, a composition for chapter 1, engraved by Boulard fils after Jeanniot, here in 2 states, and a composition for chapter 12, engraved by Champollion after Toudouze, also in 2 states. At the end of the second volume is an illustrated advertising brochure from the Conquet bookstore, the leaflet describing the 1885 engravings and the notice to the bookbinder for the placement of the engravings. Very nice copy. Slightly passed backs, a few scattered freckles on the guards.
