Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne was a French marshal, born in Sedan on 11 September 1611 and died in Salzbach (Germany) on 27 July 1675, who distinguished himself during the Thirty Years' War and the Fronde. To preserve the sovereignty of the Duchy of Bouillon and the principality of Sedan, which Richelieu coveted, Turenne entered the service of France in 1630, at a time when the Thirty Years' War was ravaging Europe. Turenne was killed by a cannonball at the beginning of the Battle of Salzbach or Sasbach, an episode of the War of Holland which took place on 27 July 1675, when French troops, commanded by Marshal Turenne, clashed with the imperial troops under Raimondo Montecuccoli.
