ATTRIBUTED TO Georg FLEGEL (Olmütz, 1566... - Lot 53 - Ader
ATTRIBUTED TO Georg FLEGEL (Olmütz, 1566 - Frankfurt, 1638)Still life with herring and pokal Oak panel, one plank, not parquet flooring. On the blade of the knife, a crowned R. Old restorations and small lacks. 21,6 x 27,5 cmProvenance : G alerie Heim, August 1961 ; Acquired from this gallery by Jean Riechers in 1961 ; An attribution to David RYCKAERT II (1586 - 1642) has been suggested Son of a shoe maker, Georg Flegel was born in Moravia in 1566 and grew up in a protestant family. He moved to Vienna in the 1580s where he joined the workshop of Lucas Van Valckenborch. Around 1593, Flegel and his master left for Frankfurt where they joined the studio of the painter Martin Van Valckenborch, brother of Lucas. From 1593 to 1597, the three men worked together on several paintings in which Flegel created fruit, flowers and other still-life related elements. He was inspired by the Flemish masters of Antwerp and Haarlem to develop his style, imbued with great realism and a form of austerity, and spread this type of composition in Germany. On the death of his master, Flegel became a citizen of the city of Frankfurt. In this painting, the composition is simple, organized in geometrical lines. Flegel represents a pickled herring accompanied by a few slices of bread, an apple, an onion, a knife and a very delicately drawn pokal. Calm and organization reign in this work which is not without recalling the calm and poetry of the "silent lives" of a Lubin Baugin.
