Eugène DELACROIX (Charenton-Saint-Maurice 1798 - Paris 1863) Lycurgue consults the pythia Black pencil, graphite and stump on lined tracing paper. Stamp of the workshop sale in the lower part (Lugt 838a). Inscribed in a spandrel. (Insolated, traces of the assembly on the edges). 22 x 28 cm Our drawing is a first thought for the spandrel of the Bourbon Palace décor, with some variations and in the opposite direction of the final realization (see: L. Johnson, The paintings of Eugene Delacroix, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1989, volumes V and VI, pl.33, fig.551, reproduced). The Louvre Museum holds a preparatory study for the pastel (RF.32259) and a watercolour (RF.31327).
