18K (750) gold oblong-shaped evening case... - Lot 57 - Ader
18K (750) gold oblong-shaped evening case with guilloché decoration and enamelled motifs, it conceals 2 compartments, a tube of lipstick, a mirror, a cigarette case, a pillbox, the clasp set with an onyx shouldered with rose-cut diamonds. Signed. French work of the 1925's. Dimensions: 10 x 3.5 cm approximately. Gross weight: 178.5 g (missing items, accidents) The Roaring Twenties marked a change in mentality which resulted in particular in the liberation of the female body with the disappearance of the corset. To this clothing release corresponds a relaxation of mentalities and the appearance of new ways of life, new gestures of beauty. Unlike at the beginning of the 20th century and until then, women wear make-up and do not hesitate to powder their nose or redden their lips in public. They play tennis, drive cars or smoke, which would have been inconceivable 20 years earlier. The feminine accessory to respond to these new behaviours is the vanity or evening beauty set, an ingenious object with different compartments for make-up, a mirror, a mini comb, which can be carried in the hand or slipped into a small bag. Parisian jewellery houses compete in creativity to make vanities that are as beautiful as they are practical. These objects indeed involve many craftsmen in their realization, the greatest masters deploy their talent there and in that, one can consider these accessories as works of art. Louis Cartier (1875-1942) created a special department dedicated to these feminine accessories, and placed Jeanne Toussaint at its head. The necessities that we present are decorated with Persian-Moghul inspired motifs reflecting the House's taste for distant cultures. The Cartier brothers were great travellers, curious about the artistic expressions of other continents: China, India, Japan and Egypt nourished their vocabulary and were an infinite source of inspiration.
