LIGHTING]. Initial "D " ornamented Leaf... - Lot 20 - Ader
LIGHTING]. Initial "D " ornamented Leaf extracted from a graduated Tempera, gouache and burnished gold on parchment France, Paris (?) circa 1480-1500 Signature "P. Lambert" in burnished gold in the upper left corner Dimensions: fragment (H. 403 x L. 340 mm); initial (H. 230 x L. 240 mm) This initial "D" surprises by its very large size and its most careful decoration. The decoration consists of a grid of vignettes on a burnished gold background, plants, flowers and fruit, with backgrounds that are staggered in their chromatic range and decoration. In the centre of this "grid", a grotesque red hybrid takes flight. This initial introduces David's Psalm 2. This miniature is embellished with an illuminated border animated with acanthus leaves and the same zoomorphic hybrid figures on a reserved background . The signature engraved in burnished gold in the upper left corner of the initial designates "P. Lambert" as the illuminator (or gilder?) of this initial. This signature is quite rare in a French miniature. This ornate initial was cut out of a very large scale. It is not known at this time from which dismembered graduation is extracted this initial and its illuminated border. A number of fragments offer comparisons, notably those that have been reused in a montage around a Birth of the Virgin attributable to the Master of Jacques de Besançon, a Parisian artist (active between 1478 and 1500) (See Avril et alia, 2011, no. 105, pp. 206-208. Paris, Musée du Louvre, Cabinet des Dessins, RF 29080: "The initial of the Birth of the Virgin is to be compared with about fifteen large historiated initials of similar construction, all illustrated by the same miniaturist, and which have been cut out of several large choral books". The note refers to eaux fragments conservés à Paris, Musée de Cluny, inv. 22714; Paris, ENSBA, coll. Mas. 142-149; Mas. 153-156). The upper border of this montage features a white phylactery, on which
