[LIGHTING] Illuminated chart with weapons. Letters of appointment granted to Nicholas de Colle (of Lucca) by Cardinal Antonio Ferrerio della Rovere Gouache, ink and burnished gold on parchment Italy, Priory of San Giovanni Spinellis (San Giovanni Novello) [Saint John of Spinelli], dated 1506 Dimensions: H. 385 x L. 585 mmIn the centre of the illuminated register is the Holy Face. A decorative band painted with plants and flowers surrounds the manuscript text. At the top left, the arms of Pope Julius II, Giuliano della Rovere (1503-1513); facing them are the arms of Cardinal Antonio Ferrerio della Rovere da Savona, who was Cardinal-Priest of San Vitale in 1505 and then Bishop of Perugia in 1506. A church had been built by Thomas Spinelli - a member of the famous banker family close to the popes - under the patronage of St. John the Baptist, just outside the Vatican walls. The exact location of this church of the Spinelli's formed the present corner of Viale Vaticano and Leone Street IV . In the 16th century the place took another name, namely the "Priory of San Giovanni Novello": this place was donated by Pope Julius II for the benefit of the singers of the Capella Giulia, the institution of sacred chant of St. Peter's Basilica.
