AUGUSTIN (Saint). De Civitate Dei. Venice:... - Lot 36 - Ader
AUGUSTIN (Saint). De Civitate Dei. Venice: Gabriele Pietro, 1475. - In-folio, 257 x 175: (294 ff. of 296, mq the first and last blank) [a15 (of 16) a-s10 s-z10 A-C10 D9 (of 10)]: Roman and Gothic car. 46 lines. Marbled basane, spine ribbed, red edges (20th century pastiche binding). BMC, V, p. 201. - Hain, *2052. - Pellechet, 1551. - Brunet, I, 559: This beautiful incunabulum edition of La Cité de Dieu de Saint-Augustin, is the seventh of the text and the third printed in Venice after that of Vindelin de Spire of 1470 and that of Jean Jeanson of the same year 1475 . It comes from the presses of the Treviso-born printer Gabriele di Pietro (14..-14..), whose first prints date back to 1472, and is printed in Gothic characters except for the common titles in Roman characters . The edition begins with 14 table pages. Complete copy, except for the white leaves a1 and D10, entirely rubbed in red and blue and including several notes in ink of the time. Several of these notes have unfortunately been cut in the margins by the bookbinder. A washed copy, probably in early 20th century binding, pastiching an 18th century binding. Rubbings, blunt corners. Washing has led to the partial or total erasure of some notes. Traces of wetness on sheets x2 and x3. The blue outlines of some letters have been redone later, certainly at the time of binding. Restored tear and stains in the margin of the first sheet. Provenance : Jean-Baptiste Colbert de Beaulieu, with ex-libris.
