JUSTINIAN. Institutions. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 6 Kal. januarij [27 December] 1486. - In-folio, 341 x 227: (90 ff. first and last blanks [sig. a-b10, c8 d6 e-f10 g12 h10 i6 k8]; car. goth. two col. of 81 lines. Brown calf on bevelled wood ais, dishes decorated with straight and curved interlacing with black and white painted highlights, completed by a network of curved golden fillets with irons raised in green, in the centre of the first dish is the super-libris de Grolier "IO. GROLIERII ET AMICORUM" and in the centre of the second dish the motto "PORTIO MEA DOMINE SIT IN TERRA VIVENTIUM", ribbed back decorated with oblique golden fillets and a golden composition with white, green and black painted highlights, chiselled and painted edges, case lined with white velvet (Théodore Hagué). The text published here is that of Justinian's Institutes. It is a law textbook for students, written by order of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century to facilitate the teaching and study of law. Written by a three-member commission, namely Tribonian, Theophilus and Dorotheus, it is divided into four books dealing respectively with persons, things, heredity and the obligations arising from a crime and actions. These Institutes form part of the Corpus juris civilis or Corpus of Civil Law also composed of 3 other collections: the Code of Justinian, the Digest and the Novelles. This edition offers the text accompanied by glosses by Accursius (1182?-1260?), a jurist and professor at the University of Florence, a specialist in Justinian.
