SUETONE. Vitae Caesarum. Venice: Damianus... - Lot 48 - Ader
SUETONE. Vitae Caesarum. Venice: Damianus of Mediolano, March 29, 1493. - In-folio, 304 x 208: (130 ff.) [sig. a8 b-u6 x8]; Roman car., 62 lines. Cold-stamped brown half calf on wood spine, spine ribbed, traces of clasps at the edge of the first course, author's name in ink on the gutter (partly contemporary binding). BMC, V, p. 543. - Hain, 15124. Third very rare incunabulum edition of the Life of the Twelve Caesars by Suetone with the glosses of the humanist and historian Marco Antonio Coccio Sabellico (1436-1506 ). It succeeds the one given in Venice by Battista Torti in 1490 and the one printed by Ulric Scinzenzeler in Milan in 1491 and, like the two previous editions, is dedicated to the doge of Venice Agostino Barbarigo (1420-1501 ). It is the first known printing of Damianus de Mediolano, also known as de Gorgonzola, whose printing career in Venice lasted just over two years. During this period, he printed about ten books before settling in Perugia where he designed four other works. Copies of this edition are very rare both on the market and in public libraries. A complete copy, preserved in part of its original binding, namely the first cover and part of the spine, the rest having been redone and restored in the 20th century. Some wormholes without gravity. Scattered clear and freckles. The last notebook is partly unbound. Provenance: Jean Stefgen, with ex-libris.
