IRIBE (Paul).
The Witness.
Paris, December 10, 1933-June 30, 1935. - 67 fascicles in-folio and large in-folio, stapled.

A collection of 67 of the 69 issues of this magazine created by Paul Iribe on his return from a long stay in the United States.

It is a new version of the first magazine that the artist published from 1906 to 1910 under the same title. Iribe began it in 1933, when the situation in France was unstable; the country was hit by the economic crisis that had broken out in the United States in 1929, the Third Republic was running out of steam, and the rise of fascism was being observed in Europe. Iribe then inscribed his newspaper in the line of right-wing, ultra-nationalist, anti-Soviet, anti-Hitlerian and xenophobic publications, and presented it as the "Image of France, of its spirit and aspirations, of its joys and angers, defender of the "Brand France"".

A total of 69 issues were published between 10 December 1933 and 30 June 1935. Each issue was composed in the same way, with a colour cover generally designed by Iribe, a large double-page drawing in the centre, an advertisement generally glorifying luxury on the last page, and a few drawings inside accompanied by short and striking texts. Other artists included H. Villemot, Maximilien Vox, Chas Laborde, Sennep, Touchagues, etc. The tonality of the drawings, apart from black and white, was blue and red, "cocardier tones which Iribe played to perfection to give his newspaper a unity of tone, a rhythm and a dramatic intensity close to an atmosphere of general mobilisation! "(Le Collectionneur française, n° 203, July-August 1983, page 6). Numbers 48 to 56 are in a larger format than the others.

Numbers 33 and 34 are missing, and
