Saint John the Baptist in carved limestone with traces of polychromy, pupils of the eyes in lead. Face with wrinkled forehead, wide, sunken eyes, beard like a necklace; hair in wavy strands and rolls; it is covered with melody with thick, stylised curls in parallel strokes. Southern Champagne, end of 12th - first third of 13th century. Soclé. (Fragment, broken and reattached). H: 97 cm An analysis of the stone carried out by Annie blanc geologist indicates that "this type of limestone may come from the Upper Jurassic, Tonnerrois and Auxerrois terrains. This limestone, much appreciated by sculptors, was used in the Middle Ages to decorate the monuments of Auxerre, Tonnerre, Avallon, and Troyes. »
