Large carved walnut Christ with polychrome... - Lot 79 - Ader
Large carved walnut Christ with polychrome remains. Head tilted on the right shoulder, surrounded by a twisted crown of thorns, hair with wavy strands, half-closed eyes, bifid beard, bust with submammary ribs, long perizonium with wave-like folds, legs bent, parallel feet Auvergne, 12th, 14th and 15th centuries. (Restorations, head reattached, perizonium cut in two places horizontally, arms missing, vermilions). H: 191 cm An examination with Carbon 14 coupled with mass spectrometry indicates that this sculpture is composed of three elements from different periods. Four samples were taken: a first from the crown of thorns, attached to the head, giving a period from 1298 to 1400, a second from the abdomen, from 1045 to 1214, the third under the perizonium, from 1444 to 1618 and the fourth, on the right ankle, from 1450 to 1630. It emerges that this beautiful Christ underwent modifications during his life of religious use, as can often be observed in medieval sculptures that were the subject of great devotion. The body of the Romanesque period was probably given a head during the 14th century and the lower part seems to have undergone restoration during the second half of the 15th century. These various interventions bear witness to the vicissitudes that this great Christ experienced. It should be noted, however, that the dating to C14 is subject to approximations and that other analyses would not give exactly the same ranges of dates.
