Beautiful chest of drawers in marquetry of... - Lot 120 - Ader
Beautiful chest of drawers in marquetry of musical instruments, the overhanging front opening with five drawers, the top of breche violet marble (repaired) resting on rounded uprights finished with small cambered feet; (total closure of the single lock chest, the system to be restored; restorations, the frame of the drawers probably redone at a later date). Attributed to the entourage of Jean-François Oeben. Louis XV period, circa 1765-1770. H: 87 cm, W: 127 cm, D: 54 cm This chest of drawers is identical to the model of Jean-François Oeben, the first version of which corresponds to the famous mahogany "à la grecque" chests of drawers delivered for Madame de Pompadour in the early 1760s. The side doors are abandoned to make way for drawers running across the entire width of the cabinet. Widely exploited later with notable variants, Oeben's invention is here respected in detail, thus making it possible to date this chest of drawers quite early (the 1760s), i.e. well before the model was distributed in a simplified manner by several cabinetmakers such as De Loose, Dautriche, Ohneberg and many others. On this occasion, they often lose the characteristics of the original model, i.e. a relatively wide template, three drawers above strictly separated from the other two drawers by a very marked moulding, the double central projection and above all the absence of an apron reinforcing the line of the piece of furniture. These elements, to which we can add the locking system that allows to lock all the drawers of the chest of drawers with a turn of the key, are so many arguments to attribute this chest of drawers to Oeben's direct surroundings. As it disappeared in 1763, it is very likely that this piece of furniture was made by a cabinetmaker of his direct entourage; in this respect, the names Leleu, Riesener or RVLC should be mentioned.
