Secretary with a flap in flower marquetry... - Lot 130 - Ader
Secretary with a flap in flower marquetry with an eventful shape on the front and sides, opening with two leaves and a flap revealing six drawers and four compartments, decorated with baskets of flowers on a sycamore background in a double frame of ribbon bows and greek the top of royal red marble resting on rounded uprights finished with small cambered feet. Stamp of Adrien Faizelot-Delorme and JME (at the back and on the top), cabinetmaker received master in 1748. Louis XV period. H: 130 cm, W: 111 cm, D: 44 cm When Adrien Faizelot Delorme made this piece of furniture, this type of secretary opening with a flap in the front can be considered as a new form. Until then, the term "secrétaire" had been reserved essentially for what we now call the "sloping secrétaire". At the time, it was known as a cabinet secretary, but from the 1760s onwards, the flap-top secretary became a great success. The marquetry that adorns our furniture also remains very characteristic of these years. Adrien Faizelot-Delorme, himself declined this form in different variations, he designed furniture very similar whose flap is replaced by a curtain; the furniture then becomes a clipboard or curtain secretary whose appearance at first glance is identical to a flap secretary. One such curtain secrétaire à rideau, also in flower marquetry and stamped by Delorme, was sold in Paris, Sotheby's, on 11 December 1999 (lot 66), another smaller one was sold in Paris on 18 May 1922 (lot 140) and a third very similar one at Ader on 9 December 1952, lot 68.
