BACH Johann Sebastian (1685-1750). P.S. "J.S.... - Lot 1088 - Ader
BACH Johann Sebastian (1685-1750). P.S. "J.S. Bach" with 3 autograph words, [Leipzig June or July] 1748; also signed by Conrad Benedictus HÜLSE and Abraham KRIEGEL; 1 oblong page in-12 (5 x 10 cm), framed with an engraved portrait; in Latin. Extremely rare autograph document signed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bequest from the estate of Maria LOBWASSER († 1710), in favour of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and its dignitaries. The Lobwasser bequest was given to St. Thomas by Maria Lobwasser, the widow of a lawyer. She died in 1710 and stipulated in her will that the annual interest on her estate of one thousand guilders was to be shared between the church and the school officials to ensure their maintenance. Payment of the interest, which amounted to 50 guilders a year, was officially made on July 2 and took place between the end of June and the beginning of July. Bach, Music Director and Cantor of the Church of St. Thomas and Director of his school, the Thomasschule, and the co-signatories of this document, the Deputy Rector of the Thomasschule zu Leipzig Conrad Benedictus HÜLSE, and the "Tertius" Abraham KRIEGEL, received their annual share. Under the title "Legatum Lobwasserianum" and the year "1748", Bach signed and inscribed: "acc. - 2 fl." for the receipt of two florins. His colleagues gave a receipt for the same amount. Then, under the date 1749, Hülse gave a receipt for two florins; this line was crossed out.
