Fernand Contandin, known as FERNANDEL (1903-1971). L.A.S., Paris 18 May 1956, to Abbé Ducouret, parish priest in Tusson (Charente); 2 pages in-8 at his address 15 avenue Trudaine (small tear removing a few letters at the top of the letter), envelope.

A nice letter about Don Camillo, to a priest who suggested an idea for a film, to which he wanted to answer personally: "since my character of Don Camillo it's impossible for me to play a priest again, because the character of Guareschi has made such an impression all over the world, that nobody would believe in another story where I would play a priest again and the spectators would take me for Don Camillo"... Moreover he finds his subject, although amusing, rather conventional, and a pale copy "of the struggles between the two protagonists of my films shot in Italy; and finally, being southern I don't see myself in a role with the accent of a region I only know from having driven through it". Nor will he be able to help him with the publication of his novel, as he knows nothing about it: "In my profession as an actor, I only have contact with producers and filmmakers who write a screenplay based on a novel [...] I am content to give life to a character and play him with my heart"...
