LAMP OF HANOUCCA - Lot 166
LAMP OF HANOUCCA Italy, 17th century for the back part, the ramp of buckets is posterior. Fused bronze, openwork and bearing traces of gilding. The back plate is decorated with two grotesque female forms, cherubs, foliage and scrolls flanking a cartouche bearing a coat of arms. (Restorations). 19,5 x 22 cm The inventiveness of the Hanukkah lamp makers knows no limits . So much so that they recovered decorative elements intended for the clergy and reused them to make lamps. This explains why we find on the back of these lamps, the presence of ecclesiastical coats of arms and a decoration with a flat hat of a bishop held by two cherubs. Hanukkah lamps made from elements of the 17th century are rare. This model is very close to the Hanukkah lamp owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum under the reference M.418-1956. It differs from it, however, in its coat of arms. It is also very close to the copy sold at Ader Nordmann on March 22nd 2017 (lot n° 121).
