Illuminated Qur'an, Ottoman Empire, 19th centuryManuscript on paper with 15 lines of text per page, in Arabic in cursive calligraphy, in black ink, some characters and terms in red ink. Double frontispiece in unwan, illuminated in gold and polychrome, the text in false reserve surmounted by poly-lobed arcatures decorated with floral scrolls. Numerous other illuminations throughout the text, gold dots separating the verses, titles of suras in white ink in a gilt cartouche, and floral sprays at the margins. The manuscript is completed with a colophon that gives the name of the copyist Isma'il Haqqi, a pupil of Khalil al-Fa'iz Effendi, and the date AH 1242 / 1826. Bound in garnet-red morocco with embossed medallions and appendages decorated with foliage and enhanced with gilt. Handwritten note in Arabic added later at the head giving two dates, 20 Aylul 1322 H / 30 September 1904 and 15 Sha'ban 1324 / 4 October 1906. size of binding: 18 x 11 cm; some stains, folds, wormholes, slight tears at the edge of the page, binding damaged, with holes, restored . A small Qur'an holder, kursi, made of wood and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, silver and ivory threads or bone, drawing a triangular checkerboard punctuated by a rose window in the upper part. 29.4 x 9 cmSmall missing inlay.
