Illustration from a Ragamala: Vilaval Raga,... - Lot 107 - Ader
Illustration from a Ragamala: Vilaval Raga, son of Bhairava, Chamba or Bilaspur, Pahari Region, North India, ca. 1690-1710Gouache on paper, man playing tanbura, his companion playing cymbals, seated in a pavilion with saffron yellow walls, within red borders. Sheet: 21.5 x 15 cm; image: 18.6 x 11.6 cmFrame . Provenance: - Francesca Galloway, 11 October 2005. - German private collection. - Royal Collection of Mandi. This painting belongs to a Ragamala whose attribution to Chamba or Bilaspur has been widely debated as well as the date of 1690-1700 or 1700-20. The recent consensus seems to favour an attribution to Chamba, a principality in the Pahari region of the Upper Punjab. Particularly fine, many paintings from this series have been dispersed at public auction. See recently Christie's, London, 26 May 2016, lot 61; 25 May 2017, lot 22 and lot 23. Two very fine examples from the series, Vasanti Ragini and Andhrayaki Ragini, were acquired in 2006 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2006.5 and 2006.33). A fine Illustration from a Ragamala: Vilaval Raga, Son of Bhairava, Chamba or Bilaspur, Pahari Region, North India, circa 1690-1710Provenance : Marie-Christine David Collection .
