This folio is from an important Shahnama manuscript associated with the antiquarian and collector George Émile Tabbagh (d. 1934). It is now attributed to India on the basis of analyses of the composition of the pigments used in the paintings. Barbara Brend and Charles Melville suggest that the manuscript may have been commissioned by Tipu Sultan (1750-99), a famous sultan of Mysore known for his opposition to the British presence in South India (Epic of the Persian Kings: The Art of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 2010, no. 101, p. 232). Two pages given by Tabbagh are in the Musée du Louvre (OA 7887 and OA 7888) and another, though still attributed to Iran around 1700, is in the British Museum in London (1928,1206,0.1). Others are in the Museum für Islamische Kunst in Berlin (inv. Nr.I.7021), the Harvard Art Museums (1948.61) and the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva. Nine pages were sold by Maître Chalvet de Recy on 26 October 1973, lots 59 to 67.
