Two Europeans on horseback, Iran qâjâr, mid-19th centuryColour pencil drawing on album page depicting two riders dressed in European style, their horses arranged head to foot, with a dog observing the scene in the lower right corner. Falsely attributed in the upper right corner to Muhammad Sadiq (inscribed "ya sadiq al-wa'd"). Fine marbled margin. 30 x 22 cmProvenance : Bonham's sale, London, 11 October 2000, lot 139 . This composition seems to have been popular in Iran in the 19th century. An early example, perhaps dating from the late 18th century, was in the Pozzi Collection: see B.W. Robinson, A Collector's Orient: Persian Miniatures, Textiles, Ceramics, and Goldsmiths Collected by Jean Pozzi, Geneva and Lyon, 1992. Another, dated to the 19th century like our drawing, was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 22 April 2016, lot 346.
