Table inlaid with bone, various types of... - Lot 165 - Ader
Table inlaid with bone, various types of wood and silver or pewter threads, Spain, Andalusia, Nasrid or post-Nasrid marquetry, 15th-16th century, probably reassembled as a table in the 19th century Rectangular wooden top with inlaid geometric decoration of a starry rosette extended on either side by two squares on the point and framed by a frieze of rectangular cartouches incorporating shields in the corners, a frieze of starry rosettes running all around. Fixed on four turned wooden legs and later wrought iron braces. Height : 67 cm ; 44 x 74 cmAccidents , small lacks. The Nasrid kingdom of Granada produced a number of high quality inlaid boxes and chests in the 14th and 15th centuries. The geometric decorative repertoire of our tray, based on an octagon motif and the contrasting play of wood, bone and pewter threads, is typical of Nasrid marquetry executed in this technique called taracea. Two pieces that illustrate this style and technique are in the Museo Nacional Arqueológico de Madrid (inv. 72/105 2) and in the Museo de Bellas Artes de Dijon (inv. 3480-139), both dating from the 14th century. However, our table is difficult to date because the marquetry may have been made during the Nasrid period or in the century following the Reconquest in 1492. It is also possible that this table top was originally part of a large cabinet or chest. The two-coloured heraldic crests in the corners of the tray might suggest a Mudéjar work belonging to a Christian nobleman. A Nasrid or Post-Nasrid Taracea Inlaid Wooden Panel mounted as a table, Spain, Andalusia, the inlaid panels, 15th or 16th century, probably mounted as a large panel and table in the 19th centuryProvenance : Marie-Christine David Collection .
