The artist's signature and the date zi ba'd Muhammad 'Ali Ashraf [shod] sana 1161 inscribed in cursive calligraphy in gold on the top. The base of the qalamdan and the sides of the inner compartment are decorated with floral blossoms and serrated leaves in gold on a red background. Length : 23 cm Several chips. The artist 'Ali Ashraf was a renowned Iranian painter of the mid-18th century who belonged to the same circle as the famous Hajji Muhammad or his brother Muhammad Zaman, with whom 'Ali Ashraf trained, as evidenced by the beginning of the inscription "after Muhammad", a tribute from the pupil to his master. If Hajji Muhammad became known for his European-style landscapes, our artist proved to be a true master in the treatment of the gul-o bulbul ("rose and nightingale") theme that occupies the walls of our qalamdan here. The Metropolitan Museum in New York holds another qalamdan by this artist with the same tribute to his master under the number 2008.246a, b. A fine lacquer papier-mâché pencase with inscription 'Ali Ashraf and date AH 1161/1748-9 CE
