A zarb drum decorated with court scenes, Iran, 20th century, Qajar styleWooden body closed with a cylindrical animal skin stretched and placed on a high flared pedestal marked by a central ring. Painted and lacquered decoration on the whole of medallions decorated with scenes of court, music, dance and drink on the body, of characters on the pedestal and surrounded by floral garlands sometimes animated by birds. Two attachments for metal shoulder strap. Height: 46 cmPierced skin , cracks, paint chips, missing shoulder strap . While the zarb is an instrument commonly seen on female musicians depicted in Qajar painting, examples of painted and lacquered instruments are rare.
