Large dish with swirling decoration, Ottoman... - Lot 232 - Ader
Large dish with swirling decoration, Ottoman Turkey, Iznik, circa 1610In siliceous ceramic with polychrome decoration on white slip under transparent glaze of a swirling composition of saz leaves starting from a rosette in reserve on a blue background and alternating with tulips and groups of three carnations, the fine groove rising to a large flat marli alternating tulips and carnations, the reverse side painted with small circular motifs in green and cobalt. Diameter: 36 cmDirt , cracks and restorations. This dish of imposing size (36 cm) is characterized by a vigorous decoration of flowers and undulating palmettes and by its form with broad wing and small cavet which derives from European ceramics of the 16th century. The polychrome floral repertoire of the reigns of Selim II (r. 1566-74) and Murad III (r. 1574-95) as seen here in turn inspired 17th-century Italian majolica, such as the 'alla Candiana' dishes produced in northern Italy. Often smaller than our dish, many examples with similar decoration were produced by Iznik kilns between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. See a dish (29 cm) in the collection of Sir Thomas Barlow, London, dated c. 1600-10 (Nurhan Atasoy & Julyan Raby, Iznik, The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, cat. 592, pp. 266-67), a second large one (34.2 cm), dated c. 1600-1610, in the Omer Koc Collection, Istanbul (Hulya Bilgi, Iznik, The Omer Koc Collection, Istanbul, 2015, cat. 217, pp. 466-67), another sold at Christie's, London, 10 October 2013, lot 142, and a smaller one (27.5 cm) dating to the late 16th century, sold at Sotheby's, London, 9 April 2014, lot 170.
