Tabak dish with palm decoration, Ottoman... - Lot 272 - Ader
Tabak dish with palm decoration, Ottoman Turkey, Iznik, circa 1570-90 A siliceous ceramic dish decorated with cobalt-blue, black and emerald-green paint on a white ground, under a transparent glaze, with a central rosette surrounded by a frieze of palms with five serrated leaves. The marli is decorated with waves and stylized rocks and the reverse is decorated with a frieze of double tulips and rosettes. Diameter : 29,6 cm A consolidated crack. This rare motif of a palm blossoming from a thin stem is found on a tabak dish attributed to Iznik around 1530-35, kept in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg under the inventory number NT-35. However, this dish dates from the decades 1570 to 1590, when many dishes decorated in 'blue and white' were produced. Compare it with dishes and tazza from the Koç Collection in Istanbul, especially a dish with a large central rosette decoration dated to around 1580-85 (Hülya Bilgi, Dance of Fire, Iznik Tiles and Ceramics in the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Ömer M. Koç Collections, Istanbul, 2009, cat.211, pp.345-52). An Iznik pottery dish, Ottoman Turkey, circa 1570-90 Provenance: Philippe Magloire Collection.
