Large phulkari hanging of the Darshan Dwar type, Eastern Punjab, first half of the 20th centuryBrick-coloured cotton embroidered with polychrome silk threads depicting women, standing under aractures, seemingly carrying a pot on their heads. Stylized animal motifs complete the decoration framed by geometric borders. 120 x 220 cmUsures . Certificate of Rabier CY, Brussels. Phulkaris are traditional Punjabi shawls embroidered by women for important ceremonies such as weddings. They are decorated with geometrical patterns covering or suggesting imaginary gardens (bagh). Here, the pattern is rare, known as the Gate of Paradise (Darshan Dwar). The description of a similar shawl in the Philadelphia Museum of Art suggests that these luxurious embroideries are offerings to Sikh (Gurdwara), Muslim Sufi, or Hindu shrines (no. 2017-9-11). A large Darshan Dwar Phulkari hanging, East Punjab, first half of the 20th century
