Rose water sprinkler (gulab pash) in the... - Lot 285 - Ader
Rose water sprinkler (gulab pash) in the form of an egret, North India, probably Rajasthan, circa 1870-80In silver and vermeil, avian round-body riveted on a base, a hole closed with a screw cap on the back, the beak extended by a small perforated "watering apple", the eyes inlaid with red glass. Height : 31,5 cm ; weight : 545 gOne glass inlay missing, the second one broken . Bibliography : Christiane Serra, Mughal Silver Magnificence, Antalga edition, 1987 p. 51. Several examples of such sprinklers are known in Indian art collections around the world, such as the identical piece IS 4-1887 from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The London aspersorium was offered at the 1887 Durbar by the state of Jhawallar in Rajasthan. It is likely that our piece also comes from there. A similar pair of gold sprinklers was presented to the Prince of Wales by the Maharao of Cutch during his tour of India in 1875-76 (Royal Collection 11475) indicating that the egret or heron sprinkler motif was popular throughout North India. A parcel-gilt silver rosewater sprinkler in the form of an egret, India, probably Rajasthan, circa 1870-80
