Louis-Ange PITOU (1767-1846) chansonnier.... - Lot 61 - Ader
Louis-Ange PITOU (1767-1846) chansonnier. L.A.S., Paris May 20, 1820, to Édouard Mounier, Director General of the Police and Bookshop ; 2 pages in-fol. (frayed edges). Rare and curious letter about the Duke of Berry's deathbed. [Pitou published that same year The Martyr's Throne of February 13, 1820, forgotten, then requested from the owners, at the end of a month, by Monsieur, Count d'Artois (Duriez, 1820), and True Last Bed of Monseigneur le duc de Berry, on February 13, 1820; followed by important events, authentic and unpublished, communicated by one of the doctors called to give his Royal Highness his care; and by Duriez, upholsterer, who provided the prince's bed (Duriez, 1820)]. He sent him "unpublished facts and authentic documents" on the death of the Duke of Berry: "I have spent a lot of money to note the monument set out in these two writings. H.R.H. the Duchess of Berry, enlightened by these two works, had Mr. Duriez give her a gold tabatiere on May 12 [...] and told us to pursue our claims. Pitou paid all the costs "on condition that the bolster of the Prince's last bed would be given to me, which was done by Mr. Duriez [...] On March 20 the bed of the Duke of Berry was requested from the owner by the secretary of the House of Monsieur Comte d'Artois on an order from the Prince: I was absent. Mr. Duriez made for me the reserves of the bolster, everything was taken away and no receipt was sent to us. To this day we have claimed me in vain for the bolster, M. Duriez for the rest of the night. Our hearts gave this monument to the House of Bourbon, but neither the King nor the Princes nor the Ministers of H.M. will authorize the measure taken towards us to keep silent and to make us offer in person through an intermediary a price well below the disbursement "...
