Philippe ARIèS (1914-1984). Signed autograph manuscript, Un - Lot 75
Philippe ARIèS (1914-1984). Signed autograph manuscript, Un historien de la société d'Ancien Régime, [1958 ] ; 6 and a half pages in-4.
An a.s. manuscript by Pierre Gaxotte, on the biography of Henri IV by Maurice Andrieux (1955) is attached.
"Marxist theory played a great role in the extension of history to the social and economic domains. Its influence is not disputable. But today, its rigidity and dogmatism no longer allow the new disciplines that it has given rise to to work off the already overly beaten track. Contemporary historians now tend to free themselves from an exhausted system, although still powerful in intellectual life". Ariès then comments on the important contribution, which frees itself from Marxist orthodoxy, of Roland Mousnier's recent studies, "One of the best historians of the Ancien Régime", notably his book on Scientific and technical progress in the 18th century, and his Research on popular uprisings before the Fronde (questioning the theories of Soviet Porchnev) .
