Pierre-Jean de BÉRANGER (1780-1857). 3 L.A.S., [1830-1838], to Félicité de Lamennais; 7 pages and a half in-4 or in-8, one address. February 5 [1830]. Sympathy for the warden, and complaints about the need to move... Passy July 20, 1834. Beautiful letter on Words of a believer: "You are thus designated to the vindictiveness of all Christendom. I have not often read encyclicals; but the one that strikes you has been the object of my full attention, less for what it contains than for the effect it can produce. ... A reply from you is announced: must I believe it? I feel the necessity of it, but I know your scruples, which seem to me to embarrass your mind, however firm and high it may be. Unfortunately your situation is not one in which a man of the world, or an ungodly man, as they say in the Catholic Church, can place himself in a position to judge what is best to be done... He reports pressure from believers to urge Lamennais to examine his situation with regard to Rome, but Lamennais did too much for the Holy See to want to "have recourse to the liberties of the Gallican Church"... etc. August 1 [1838]. He asked if it is true that the police raided Lamennais' home. He himself was very happy: "You cannot imagine how many testimonials of friendship I have received in the last three months. Didn't Mr. de Chateaubriand, who is about to leave his house on Rue d'Enfer, want to help me stay in the retirement I was forced to give up, however modest it may have been?
