Charles DICKENS (1812-1870). L.A.S., [London] December 18, 1849, to Mark Lemon; 1 page and a half in-8; in English. He congratulates him on his play, admirably performed and rising through the three acts to end in triumph. Howe was not good, but the others were. Wallack [actor James William Wallack] was above all praise. Dickens had never seen such a beautiful, picturesque, splendidly melodramatic play. He really carried the whole play on his shoulders, and served gallantly. Wallack is coming to dinner at his house on Sunday, and he invites Lemon... "It went admirably -- rose at it went on -- mounted immensely in the third act -- and closed in triumph. Howe was not good, but the rest were. Wallack beyond all praise. I have never seen such a fine, picturesque, splendid piece of melodrama. He really bore the whole play on his shoulders, and did gallant service "...
