Jean-Georges FARCY (1800-1830) philosopher,... - Lot 102 - Ader
Jean-Georges FARCY (1800-1830) philosopher, poet and romantic journalist, killed in 1830 during the attack on the Tuileries. 3 L.A.S., 1827-1829, to the painter Alexandre Colin; 7 pages in-8 or in-4, addresses. A manuscript of homage to Farcy (by Colin?) is attached: "One year has already passed since your blood gnawed the earth"... (2 p. in-4); and an L.A.S. from J.-M. Dargaud to Colin, on Farcy "my old friend" (on the back 3 pencil sketches). Very rare letters during his travels. [They are addressed to his friend the painter Alexandre Colin (1798-1875), who made two portraits of him, one of which is in the Musée Carnavalet]. [Naples] December 1, 1827, on his return from his trip to Sicily: "There is in fact complete nullity of costume in men, extreme poverty in women, and in general little beauty. It would have been better for you to see the peasants of Abruzzo who now abound in Naples with their goatskin bagpipes. They are all very picturesque "... Gravesend June 2, 1828, on the brig that will take him to Brazil "I don't know where and come back I don't know when", he makes a bitter assessment of his stay in London. "Among this vain and disdainful people one must present oneself with advantages at least equal to those they possess. I have never felt more a need to be rich. This is the indispensable condition for living, at least as much as one lives in London. Otherwise you just vegetate, or rather dry up on your feet. I've admired London. I've found it to be the most beautiful and powerful city in the universe. But for me it has been nothing but a beautiful prison" .... Brest 22 April 1829, announcing his return from Brazil, "a journey without pleasure and without any advantage whatsoever"; he will return via Nantes, Tours and Blois....
