André GIDE (1869-1951). 4 L.A.S., 1949-1950,... - Lot 107 - Ader
André GIDE (1869-1951). 4 L.A.S., 1949-1950, to Miss Muni, in Paris; 5 pages in-4 or in-8, a letterhead Clinique du Belvédère in Nice, envelopes. Enclosed are 6 photographs of Muni in the role of Amal (stamped by the photographer Lucien Lorelle); one original photograph and 5 countertypes of Muni and André Gide; 2 leaflets and a cardboard box for the 1949 performances; and 3 l.a.s. from Catherine Gide to Muni (1952-1965), one of which gave her the exclusive role of Amal for two years. [The actress Marguerite Dupuy, known as MUNI (1929-1999), played the title role in Amal et la lettre du Roi, a play by Tagore adapted by Gide, given by the Paris Curtain at the Théâtre des Mathurins on 15 June 1949, directed by Jean Marchat]. Nice 18 May 1949. "For nearly 3 weeks in the clinic and still unable to write, I want you to know what comfort I find in the exquisite testimony of your sympathy. The memory of these extremely rare and marvellous flowers comes to help my convalescence. ... I wish you all the best for this spectacle which I would have had the great pleasure of attending... Alas! there can be no question of it. But with you in my heart and in my mind." June 22nd. "But why should the excellent memory I would like to keep of your visit be damaged by the disclosure, in miserable newspapers, of photographs which I thought should remain between us and, so to speak, confidential - to which, of course, I would not have lent myself if I had sensed that such absurd use would be made of them. I cannot conceal from you that I was painfully surprised by this... [6 July]. "All my smiling tributes and my best memories... December 29, 1950. "The flowers are wonderful, but the exquisite phrases that accompany them give them an eloquence that touches me in the best place of my heart. I listen to them tirelessly"...
