Jean-François CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832) Egyptologist,... - Lot 185 - Ader
Jean-François CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832) Egyptologist, the decipherer of hieroglyphics. L.A.S. "J.F. Champollion the Younger", Alexandria 30 October [1829], to Nestor L'Hôte "chez Mr le Docteur Pariset au Kaire"; 1 page in-8, address. Rare letter to the draftsman who accompanied him to Egypt. [Nestor L'Hôte (1804-1842) accompanied Champollion during the Franco-Tuscan campaign on the Nile and accumulated drawings and surveys that will illustrate Champollion's Monuments of Egypt and Nubia. The letter is written as the Egyptologist and his draftsmen prepare to return to France]. "I take advantage of Abd-el-Ouahed's return to Cairo to pray to Monsieur Lhôte to be so kind as to write to me straight away how far we have got with Bolano - to know what I owe him from his treatment set at I don't know how much per month; and the sum I must give him independently of the 30 thalaris from the sale of the objects I will give him for baksheesh. He wished The Host "good health, courage and success and his two travelling companions and I am expecting them on November 15th - for sure! but... France! He asks for "some serrail pastilles and other perfumes such as aloe wood and sandalwood". I have enough essence of rose".
