FAKE MONEY. Jacques-Jean BARRE (1793-1855,... - Lot 206 - Ader
FAKE MONEY. Jacques-Jean BARRE (1793-1855, general engraver of coins at the Monnaie de Paris from 1842 to 1855; he is the designer and engraver of the first two series of postage stamps of France). Set of 27 handwritten coins, partly autographed, Paris, Birmingham and London 1845; about 50 pages in-4 or in-fol. Interesting dossier on the manufacture of counterfeit French coins in England. Barre is sent to England to investigate. The file is mainly composed of drafts of letters from Jacques-Jean Barre, but also of letters received during his mission, translations and a 5-page in-fol. report on the investigation carried out in England about this counterfeiting. There is also an interesting letter on "some modifications to the impressions of the hallmarks and bigorns ... to prevent counterfeiting and to make the imitated hallmarks useless in the hands of the forgers" (3 p. in-4). Plus a drawing of a press.
