Louis LUMIèRE (1864-1948) photographer and inventor of the cinematograph. L.A.S., Paris July 7, 1921, to Henry Le Châtelier; 3 pages in-8 with Grand Hotel letterhead. About Jules Carpentier, engineer, inventor and manufacturer of the Lumière cinematographs, who died on June 26 in Joigny, in a car accident. Le Châtelier's telegram reached him in Paris: his thought touched him deeply. "I was aware day by day and almost hour by hour of the state of our unfortunate friend and after having had a few glimmers of hope, I had to learn the fatal outcome. It is a deep sorrow for me and I mourn the best of friends, the good and generous heart that you knew as I did. The great attendance at his funeral showed the general esteem in which he was held. Mrs. Carpentier, with admirable courage, insisted on attending it to the end, in spite of the precarious state in which she was still in, as a result of the appalling accident " .
