François ROBERT (1737-1819) geographer. 5 L.A.S. (2 as "King's ordinary geographer" and one as "above King's ordinary geographer"), [circa 1780 ?]-1815, to the publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke or his collaborators; 8 pages and a half in-4, 4 addresses. On his Methodical Encyclopedia. Géographie moderne (3 vols., Panckoucke, 1782-1788). To Charles-Joseph Panckoucke. September 27, 1780, to "I have just obtained in communication the archives, titles and chartres of the famous Royaume d'Yvetot, an article of Geographie which was never clarified, and I will give the top a completely new piece"; he intends to correct "gross errors" of the old encyclopedia... January 16, 1781: "The work to be done on the Geographical part of the Encyclopedia is triple, at least, that on which I was relying. Instead of a work to be corrected, to be retouched, it is a work to be redone"; he would therefore like "to have the perspective of a copy of the Encyclopedia"... 13 May. On his steps to press the manufacture of their volumes; he quotes an extract from his proposal to the Marquis de Villette to "provide in the Encyclop. l'art Ferney"... 9 June 1781, to Mr. Ferney. Plassant, asking him to send him the volume of the Encyclopedia in-8° in which the article Neuchâtel is found, and to attach a proof of the Encyclopedia's prospectus: "it is important that I review the article concerning my part"... 24 May 1815, to the bookseller Hector Agasse (son-in-law and associate of Panckoucke): "As a result of this uninterrupted series of upheavals which have plagued the globe and particularly our Europe for 25 years, our Geographical Dictionary in the Encyclopedia will find itself very old: it will be in great need of rejuvenation..."...
