Jeanne Le Roux de la Chapelle, Baroness TASCHER DE LA PAGERI - Lot 291
Jeanne Le Roux de la Chapelle, Baroness TASCHER DE LA PAGERIE (1754-1822), wife of the previous owner. L.A.S., Saint-Pierre M[artini]que 4 January 1803, to the future Empress Josephine, "my dear niece"; 4 pages in-4. Beautiful and long letter to Josephine. She thanks her niece and the first Consul, "your worthy and respectable husband", for the welcome they gave to her eldest son: "Of you two, my dear friend, I expected only such a procedure, oh! No, certainly you had not asked for your uncle Tascher's children for the unhappy hikers, but my dear niece, imagine how great our happiness is to have a relative such as you, and imagine if it is possible for you to have all the extent of our attachment and gratitude for you". She announced the departure for France of her two younger sons Henri and Louis, and the forthcoming arrival of Stéphanie, Josephine's goddaughter, "to go and throw herself into your arms in the spring". Then on the birth of the imperial prince Napoleon-Charles (son of Louis Bonaparte and Hortense de Beauharnais, October 10, 1802): "We learn through Angletaire [...] that your dear daughter has given birth to a boy that you and the First Consul [...] held on the baptismal font. She congratulates them. She evokes her "sister", Josephine's mother, and her husband who was overcome by gout. Then she comes to Jerome Bonaparte who "is doing well. At the moment he is at the Fort de France with his corvette where he is having a lot of fun and the day before yesterday I received a letter from him in which he tells me that he must be here today or tomorrow...". She assures her niece of her affection and pays her respects to Napoleon.
