theology. Manuscript collection, late 17th century; in-12 of 441 pages plus qqs ff. blanks, contemporary parchment binding (graffiti on top cover). Careful manuscript, written in one hand on paper set in red, bringing together the writings of three 17th century theologians: Armand-Jean de Rancé, abbot of La Trappe, reformer of the Cistercian order (1626-1700), Guillaume Le Roy, abbot of Hautefontaine (1610-1684), and Michel Mauduit, oratorian (1634-1709). It includes : * Essay. If it is a legitimate & holy practice to mortify & humiliate Religious by fictions by attributing to them faults they have not committed, & faults that one does not see in them (134 p.), according to Rancé: Lettre d'un abbé régulier sur le sujet des humiliations et autres pratiques de religion (1677). * Answer to the dissertation of M. N. abbé de H.F... with remarks in the margin of the author of the dissertation where he shows the defects of this answer (139 p.), followed by De l'auteur de la dissertation (7 p.). Abbé de Hautefontaine's "remarks in the margin" are copied in the margins. * Reply to a letter to an ecclesiastic concerning the declaration of Mr l'abbé de la Trappe contained in the large letter of 30 November 1678 that this abbot wrote to Mr le Mareschal de Belfond, 9 February 1679 (81 p.), based on Rancé: Lettre de M. l'abbé de la Trape à M. le Maréchal de Bellefond (Grenoble, 1679). * Second answer..., March 8, 1679 (56 p.). * Dissertation on the Acts of the Apostles (25 p.), based on the Analysis of the Acts of the Apostles, with dissertations on difficult places (1697), by Michel Mauduit.
